Whether you are simply thinking about or you have actually decided to start your own business online, it is absolutely critical to understand the reality of what it takes to be successful.
Before starting your own business online, you must first possess or develop the proper perspective in order to achieve success. There are 5 essential “must haves” that you need to fully understand to be successful in your business.
Essential #1 You must have a strong desire or reason for starting your own business. Is it to control your own financial future? Maybe you can’t stand living from paycheck to paycheck. Want out from under the authority of your arrogant boss? Do you need more money due to the fact that living expenses keep increasing while your paycheck stays the same?
Whatever your reason or desire is, it should be powerful enough to motivate you to start your own business to either add to or replace your current level of income.
As a personal example, I didn’t want my job to dictate my life any more. I wanted the choice to be able to take time off and not have the bills tell me I couldn’t. The cost of living was climbing higher than my paycheck! More time at work meant less time having fun and being with my family. That was motivation enough for me to decide that I wanted to start a business online. I figured that once I set up my own business online, it could simply run in the background while I afforded and did the things I wanted.
Essential #2 You must absolutely believe in yourself to be able to do what it takes and that quitting is not an option. I was told once that failure only happens when you quit. At another point in time I heard this saying: When the going gets tough the tough get going! Again, whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.
My point is that I learned to believe in myself by not quitting and you can too. I view a successful business like a marriage where divorce is not an option. If it were an option, at the first sign of real trouble you would bail out and never experience a successful marriage. Because of this “essential rule” your choice is to stay until success is realized.
Essential #3 You must understand that success doesn’t happen overnight and will take time to develop. There is no get rich quick scheme. (If there were I would have found it by now:-) What I do know is that good old-fashioned hard work and discipline rewards success. I have operated a successful service business for years and know first hand the truth of that statement.
In the book of Ecclesiastes it says: Cast your bread on the waters for you will find it after many days. This is the value of diligence.
Essential#4 You must understand the cost of owning your own business. The money that you have left over after the bills are paid is known as disposable income. The reality is, that you will either need to use some of it to start your own business or you will have to finance. Either way, investment money is needed. How much, is another topic.
The beautiful thing about starting a business online is that it is not nearly as expensive as starting an offline business, not to mention it has a worldwide audience!
Expenses for a brick and mortar business may include rent, inventory, employees, insurances, etc…. $$$$, you get the idea.
Time is another consideration. You will have to use some of that “disposable” time as well. That is the hard part in my opinion. You have to break out of your comfort zone and invest some of your extra time to make the transition. Not to worry though, remember essential #1? That will help you to create new habits!
It is kind of an oxymoron isn’t it? I have to give up the very things I need, time and money to get more time and money… in a nutshell, YES, but only until things really get rolling.
Essential #5 You must take action! Understanding the previous 4 essential “must haves” simply isn’t enough! You have to make the decision to go for it!
A strong desire, believing in yourself, understanding what it takes only works when you take action. The action that you need to take is right now! Once you take that action the other 4 “must haves” kick in and you are headed for success. So, start your own business online TODAY!
